PING, the project:
PING, a light artwork in which light and sound is used in networks, will be applied to connect artand technology. A long time ago signs primitive means were used like smoke signals, drums and fire beacons on mountain tops to communicate messages along a great distance. Light artwork PING refers to this mode of communicating. Light and sound is transferred by modern technology,PINGs lanterns pass on a message from one beacon to the next until the message has reached the end of the line. Slow sounds, increasing drums or just the sound of a single bell travels through the 200 beacons spread over a 125 meter long trajectory. A chainreaction of messages embraces the spectator with an atmosphere built with dynamic light and sound. At times hard and fast or poetic and still.
In Chinese customs, religion and philosophies, thoughts and wishes are sent in physical or performative form. Sky lanterns are released to represent thoughts and feelings, if you want to give a wish more vigour you can beat a drum or a gong for a certain amount of times. PING uses high tech gear to convey these messages. A wireless network connects the beacons to an intelligent system through which the information flows. And because of this network there are more possibilities than just sending a message.
The beacons of PING pass their content in sequential form, from beacon to beacon to beacon, until the message has reached the end of the line. When enlarged several times the connections of a chip or a motherboard resemble a roadmap of a city. You could view the streets as connections through which the subsequent communication flows in a city.
PING doesn’t have a set shape and is adaptable to the available space. For an additional fee it’s possible to add new light and sound features to match the specific location or event. PING can be set in a large open space or form an intimate setting, because of this PING is one of a kind.
Logistics, technology and safety
PING consists of 200 light and sound beacons. Every beacon contains a small computer (Raspberry Pi Zero W) that controls the light and sound. The router network (8 routers) creates the network on which the light and sound commands travel from a laptop via node.js and DHCP server. With every command a timestamp is sent which makes the exact timing possible.
The beacons are fastened on a wooden construction that will be built on site in a shape that fits the environment. The standard length of the construction is 125 meters or 136 yards but can be adapted to a shorter or longer form. The wooden shape contains power and network cables and can stand on almost any surface.
