Melissa Carey has partnered with Market City Shopping Centre in Sydney, Australia, to create an art installation for the Chinese New Year.
Melissa Carey has created an 8 metre art installation that is a modern representation of Chinese fortune sticks, which are used for good fortune. "Kau Cim", "Kau Chim" or Lottery poetry is a fortune telling practice that originated in China in which the querent (person asking the question) requests answers from a sacred oracle lot. By shaking the container with the fortune sticks, the first stick to fall out has the answer or fortune.
This art installation has been created using hundreds of hand-painted pieces of wood that reference Chinese fortune sticks.They have been suspended to create a helical spiral form. When viewing the sculpture from Level 2, the circle formation is visible, which symbolises harmony, balance and good fortune.

About Melissa Carey
Melissa Carey is an established Contemporary Artist living on the East Coast of Australia and her work has been showcased internationally. She loves to create large sculptural installations, contributes installation art within the community through festivals, art exhibitions, collaborations and commissions, and has a passion for sharing her knowledge and creativity through teaching modern art & craft workshops for adults and kids since 2014. Given her background in Project Management, Quality Assurance and Training for 12 years, she is well equipped with the right skill set for managing art projects and events, and teaching creative classes.
Melissa Carey has a hands on approach to her artwork, and is involved in every stage of the process, from concept design, to fabrication and installation. Some highlights of Melissa’s art career are: completing an art residency and solo exhibition in Berlin; Creating an 8 metre art installation "Fortune Circle" for Chinese New Year; creating a large art installation for Air Nightclub in Perth; creating a Macrame Commission for Seafolly across multiple stores in Australia & USA; creating a 9 metre woven glowing Tunnel Installation at the Beams Festival; and participating in local community events and festivals.
Melissa Carey has worked with leading brands such as Google, Ikea, Seafolly Swimwear, Salvation Army, Atlassian, Market City Shopping Centre, and more.
Melissa Carey regularly volunteers within the community - she recently volunteered at the Sydney Children's Hospital teaching craft in the Mental Health Ward, and a past highlight was working in the art room at Princess Margaret Children’s Hospital in Perth, WA.
Melissa Carey is passionate about the environment, recycling, healthy eating, taking reflective moments, smiles, watching the waves, philosophy, documentaries, giggles, wandering through forests, and passing on skills through her Creative Workshops.
She grew up in the neighbourhoods of Perth, Australia. She is an adventurer, travelling wherever the wind blows, and has lived abroad in London and Holland, and now resides on the east coast of Australia.
